Young people hit by Tory cuts

'Young people are the big losers in the Northamptonshire County Council's budget cuts' says Lib Dem County Group Leader Richard Church. 'Hot on the heels of closing Roadmender, the Tories are planning to close down the Council's entire Youth Service, close Grendon Hall (just as it plans to celebrate 60 years of providing opportunities for young people to enjoy the countryside), close a pupil referral unit, close the Learning Discovery Centre, cut school transport and bus subsidies and close three libraries.
But it's not just young people. Older people use many of these services, and in addition charges for social care are to be increased, and Nordis, which provides opportunities for people with learning difficulties is to be closed.
Everybody is to blame but the Tories- say the Tories
'Council leaders are trying to blame all this on the Government and their Labour predecessors in County Hall' continued Richard Church, but they have been planning this for months. Long before they knew the government's poor funding settlement they were working on lists of posts to be made redundant. Brian Binley MP spent 80% of his 40 minute presentation to the council's executive attacking the Labour government and his Labour predecessors, and less than 20% on the Tories own plans. The Government must take their share of the blame, but the lions share rests with the Tory administration that has got its priorities utterly wrong. They want to make our streets safer, but how are they going to cut crime and anti-social behaviour if they give young people less to do and nowhere to go? They have gone for shortsighted, short term cuts which show they know the cost of everything and the value of nothing'.
