Cllr. David Garlick - Community Services Spokesperson for the Liberal Democrats on Northamptonshire County Council
At the Cabinet Meeting held today (7th June), the Liberal Democrats will be asking the Cabinet Member for Finance: "If the financial outturn is so good, can you not use £45,000 out of the £16million plus reserves to save the RNIB service which is currently provided via the Council's Library Service?"
Cllr. David Garlick, Lib Dem Spokesman for Community Services says: "We welcome the fact that the Cabinet Member has agreed to delay the implementation of the withdrawal by the Library Service of the RNIB service. However we believe that the interests of the current service users would be best served by continuing the service for at least the rest of this year, and that means continuing to fund the service.
"In the meantime a longer term solution over the provision of equipment needs to be sought through a proper engagement with the service users and their representative Voluntary Bodies. This will recognise that the proposed rushed 'one size fits all' solution may discriminate against some users being able to access the service and that a mixed service based on an individuals assessed needs is what is required."
