The Leader of the Official Opposition at the County Council, Liberal Democrat Cllr Brendan Glynane, has today launched an attack on the Conservatives for cancelling the meeting of Full Council due to take place on 16th December. The meeting was cancelled only hours after the Liberal Democrats had submitted a motion which gave all 73 county councillors the opportunity to debate the future of the County's Sure Start Centres.
Cllr Glynane said "The Conservatives are shutting down democratic debate. Are they planning to shut down vital Sure Start Centres too? Full Council is the only meeting where members of the public can come and speak to all 73 of their Councillors on issues of vital importance in the County. In their haste to stifle this opportunity for members of the public to raise their own concerns it's clear that the Conservatives are running scared in Northamptonshire."
"The next ordinary business meeting of the council is not until April, after the budget. We had put our motion in to make sure that Sure Start Centres were protected in the budget round. Now there will be no opportunity to do that prior to the budget being set."
"Not only that, but there will be no opportunity for Councillors or members of the public to raise other concerns in a public meeting of all 73 Councillors, such as how the Conservative administration have responded to the big freeze. We're in for a cold winter, and we need to make sure the Conservatives don't let residents down. The next meeting is not until after the winter, so Councillors and residents have lost the main chance to hold the Conservatives accountable for gritting."
